How Water Affects Your Coffee’s Taste

You can’t make a good cup of coffee (or any coffee at all) without one important ingredient: water. Water is crucial to the brewing process because it helps to extract all of the flavors from the coffee grounds, so using the perfect temperature of water can play a big role on how that final cup will taste.

Ideally, a good cup of coffee is brewed using water that ranges between 195˚F to 205˚F to allow for the grounds to easily dissolve into the water, quickly extracting the flavor of the grinds. Using water outside of this range will result in under or over-dissolved grounds, ultimately affecting the final taste of the coffee.

Although water temperature is a crucial piece to the big puzzle of creating a perfect cup of coffee, it is not the only piece. The size of the coffee grounds determines the speed that the water travels through them, releasing the flavors at different rates. A finer grind will increase extraction, resulting in a more flavorful cup of coffee.

Varying water temperatures will help to achieve specific coffee flavors, but consistently brewing in the suggested 195˚F to 205˚F temperature range will ensure a good cup of coffee every time.
